The Office – Step 1: Thinking about it

Standard

Joshua and I don’t work from home a lot – but we do love our gadgets for fun and entertainment. We have a spare bedroom in our current apartment to use as our shared office room/ study- it is a luxury for us – so I would love to have this place fully functional so that I can do my craft work and Joshua can do his browsing and take work calls.
When I was doing my recent round up Top Picks post for a blue, aqua and yellow home office – I was thinking of what exactly we wanted and need to complete our home office and make it usable. I think I would go for a white, blue, green and black home office because that is one of my favorite color schemes from childhood. Since it is a rental house we can’t paint the walls but I would love to do that when we have a house of our own.

Home Office Wish List

Our office room has plenty of storage space in the wall cupboard – what it seriously lacks however is furniture and organization to get it usable  Here is my list of stuff I dreamed up for my dream home office- in order of importance because I’m crazy like that 🙂

  • A Metal Desk / Wooden Desk with black finish
  • Chairs – I would love two cane chairs painted in a cool and refreshing blue/ green
  • Curtains
  • A Wall clock – probably a green one just like the red (see it in action in our living room) and yellow ones we own
  • from Home Centre by Lifestyle.
  • A wastebasket
  • A white/black board
  • Fun-cushions for josh and me – but nothing too flowery
  • Pen stand
  • A Pin board
  • Wall Decor – A row of 4 same-sized photo frames with art
  • Window Sill Decor
  • Storage Basket
  • File Holder
  • A small plant – cactus/ succulent perhaps?

Do you have a home office/ work space??How would you decorate it? What are the 5 must-have decor items you would suggest to me for my home office?

I would love to see pictures of your work space or hear from your about your plans for your home office.

Top Picks Series and a Blue, Blue green and Yellow Home Office

Standard

I am a newbie to the world of interior design blogging but I’ve been interested in interior design since my teens – just ask my mom – she’s paid for thousands of interior design magazines 😉

I’ve followed the Dress Your Home blog by Lakshmi for quite some time and I love her valuable information on home decor (especially painting) and organization. Lakshmi features her top 5 picks for a particular item/theme – be it fabric, home organizing picks or baking supplies as a series of posts titled – Friday Shopping. From these posts, I came across this online Indian shopping site called Lime Road. (I haven’t bought anything from them yet – because I can’t decide which things I want to buy first!) Since I like virtual window shopping – I thought I would do a similar series – focusing on things that I would like to buy mainly and things that fit a particular theme. Though I can’t promise to be regular, I can promise you that I will show you only things that I think are worthy of a place in your home, look good and are affordable too 🙂 (I personally find that most interior magazines these days showcase products that are too expensive and out-of-reach for me- heck! How am I supposed to have enough cash to shell out 5,000 Rs on designer candlesticks!
So enough of my rambling – what I wanted to say is that I will make some “Top Picks” posts with affordable, aesthetic and sensible home decor products that you can buy off online websites in India.

Today’s “Top Picks”  collection is in the theme of yellow, green and blue – for a home office. I’ve been looking at this color combination for my home office room/study and I might pick it if I find enough decor products for it. All items are from Lime Road today – I hope you like the fruits of my virtual window shopping 🙂

Top Picks: Blue, Blue-Green, Yellow Home Office

[All photographs taken from Lime Road.com]

From left to right:

House This – Yellow camera motif window curtain – Rs 799

A bright and peppy yellow curtain shields you from the harsh lights of the outside world while still appealing to that “nerdy” side of you with the camera motif. This curtain is sure to create an energetic and productive home office 🙂

Conserve – iPad Cover with Flap – Rs 335

iPads do a good job of replacing your PC for most tasks – so why not deck your iPad in style. This cool, navy blue denim iPad cover is my favorite at Lime Road.

Jaipur Blue Pottery – Ceramic Oval Dish – Rs 249

Keep your cell phone, wallet and pen-drives out of your working area by putting them in this sweet ceramic oval dish from Jaipur Blue Pottery – they make it so hard to choose just one dish from their collection! Try pairing it with other dishes in different shapes like a square dish or a round dish for more storage options to keep your stapler, scissors etc 🙂

House This – Barcode Cushion Cover – Rs 199

Lounge around on this bright and peppy Barcode cushion cover that is sure to jolt you out of writer’s block, worker’s block or any other block 😉 Make your work/ study time more comfortable by adding this cushion to your home office.

Bharat Pottery- Pale Yellow Bone China Mug – Rs 96

If I had this pretty pale yellow mug – I’d use it for everything from tea to water 🙂 Seriously, I have not seen a prettier pale yellow mug – good for those long nights spent poring over blog posts or work reports and conference calls 🙂

I hope this post was useful for you and gave you some decor ideas. What color schemes/ decor themes are you looking for?

Coming back to Day 5 of the January Cure

Day 5’s task is to choose a project that I really want to tackle this month which fits the following criteria:

– A project that can be completed this month, in a few hours. My project will probably take the entire month and a lot of hours, but it can be completed once my furniture is here 🙂 I want to concentrate on my living room this month and I want to make it usable!

– A project that will make a noticeable difference. A fully functional living room that I am not ashamed to invite people to – yes please!!! That would make a massive difference to our social (read lack of) lives too.

– A project that you’ll be proud to share. I would love to share pictures of our living room furnishing – wait – let me make it into a post series 🙂

So what next? I will have to do some research and list out what exactly I want to accomplish this month. Then I need to take some before and after pictures and then I’m all set….Stay tuned for our Living Room posts 🙂

Apartment Therapy January Cure: Day 2

Standard

Set Up Your Outbox

Today’s assignment for the January Cure from Apartment Therapy is to set up my Outbox and put one item in it.

The Outbox Rules

1. Anything can go in the Outbox

2. The Outbox is allowed to get messy

3. Everything must stay in the Outbox for at least one week

4. After that time you have several choices
a. Take anything back out
b. Leave anything you are undecided about for one more week
c. Dispose of the rest by moving to the garbage, recycling bin, or giveaway pile.

This brings me to something I have long had issues with – letting go of stuff!

The Stuff of My Dreams Nightmares

It’s not easy for me to get rid of stuff – I am a hoarder. I keep wrapping paper from gifts friends have given me, I keep cardboard boxes for every single thing in my house and I also collect plastic bags in the event that we may NEED them 😛 I think this Outbox activity is a God-send 🙂 I need to get control over all the cardboard boxes that are currently running amok in one of my kitchen cupboards. I also have to sort out my craft stuff and put it away. Though the Outbox activity is to get rid of clutter and dispose/ give it away mainly – I think I should use it to get rid of stuff that I collect too…

Put a Thing In It

bird_on_it

I actually don’t have a bird to put on it but ….I’m going to use my Office Room as my outbox for this activity. The thing I am going to put in it is a cardboard box that one of our family friends used to gift us a photo frame – I’ve been hanging on to it for the last 2 weeks!

What did you put in the box today?

How you doing?

joeytribbiani

So how are you doing so far? Liking the January Cure?? I sure am 🙂
